ISAF World Rankings - Mistral Women
    Posted On:  08/06/2005 12:25:01
There are considerable changes to the women's Mistral Rankings but unlike the men there is a new number one. Olga MASLIVETS (UKR) has finally displaced Olympic gold medallist Faustine MERRET (FRA) from the number one spot she has held for almost a year. A sixth at the Worlds where MERRET did not sail was enough to boost the Ukrainian, who will celebrate her 27th birthday at the end of this month, one place up the Rankings and complete a Mistral double for the Ukraine.

Germany's Amelie LUX (GER) returns to the top five at number two. The 2000 Olympic silver medallist won the silver medal at the Worlds and went on to also finish second at the ISAF Grade 3 Festival on the Beach, subsequently moving four places up the Rankings. The 2003 ISAF World Champion, Lee KORZITS (ISR) also makes here return to the top five after a finishing just outside the medals at the 2005 Worlds. KORZITS moves up nine places to number three.

The big news from the World Championship was the outstanding performance from the young Spanish sailor Blanca MANCHON. MANCHON, who was the youngest sailor in Athens at just 17, is no stranger to podium finishes having won the silver at the 2002 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship which she followed up with a bronze in 2003. Her dominance in Sicily however was unquestioned. Six bullets from eleven races and only twice finishing outside the top ten, she was 13 points clear of second placed LUX. MANCHON followed her victory at the Worlds with victory at the World Festival on the Beach and moves up nine places to number four. Antonia FREY (GRE) completes the top five moving up two places from seven. The 2004 Mistral Youth World Champion and 2003 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship silver medallist, 20 year old Flavia TARTAGLINI (ITA), pulled out all the stops at the Worlds and had her best ever result on the senior circuit. TARTAGLINI took the bullet in the final race and won the bronze medal by just three points from Lee KORZITS. She subsequently climbs twelve places up the rankings to number 13. Just below her at 14 is Marina ALABAU (ESP) who has made a gigantic leap of 17 places from 31 after a seventh place finish at the Worlds.

Ten new sailors join the women's Mistral rankings, the highest being Malgorzata BIALECKA (POL) whose 23 place at the Worlds enters her at number 59 on the rankings.
