international mistral class organisation MOD - MJOD |
IMCO annual report to the Windsurfing Committee - incorporating reports on both Mistral (MOD) and Mistral Junior(MJOD) One-Design Classes.
Due to the number of One Designs in the world and the sophistication of the class structure around the world, the class is in a strong position to provide MNAs everywhere the opportunity to develop windsurfing in their countries. The board is the current ISAF Youth Worlds equipment and hope to remain so for at least one more year. The class made submissions to the ISAF November Conference asking for the MOD as the 2006 ISAF Youth equipment. This would surely help the Class in developing the activity in the Youth and Junior divisions. The class has established a good working relationship with the manufacturer. In particular, Boards & More (B&M) has advised the class of their ability to supply spare parts (cassette box, mast track) for the old version of the MOD. Any request for these spares to the class, will be forwarded to B&M and from them to the local importer or, in case they will not be available, sent by freight. In the mean time B&M has confirmed the production in Cobra of the new board and the availability of 6.6 and 7.4 sails. For the future and because nations consider the new RS:X as elite equipment only, some of the executive, are considering the introduction of a less expensive hybrid package to use for general competition nationally. It may be possible to seek ISAF approval for a new One Design class based on the Prodigy. The reason why this board is so successful in the USA is because the B&M distributor provided charter equipment to many regattas around the country as well as service personnel. B&M has given the availability to do the same at major international regattas and work out a joint communications strategy to approach MNAs At a recent meeting at the IMCO/FW Continental Championship in Japan, the Asian delegates agreed that they would continue to work with the MOD for a number of years (for sure until 2009). There are several reasons for this. The first being that they cannot afford to transfer all their programs onto new equipment in the short term; the Hong Kong Open and the 2006 Asian Games includes the MOD. The meeting also expressed their concern over the qualification system for the 2008 Olympic Regatta as they feel this prejudices their chances of having athletes at the Games. Cascais, Portugal, will be a windy venue compared to China 2008. IMCO will continue to organize world and continental championships as it has always done with the following changes. When there is a World Championship in Europe there will be no stand alone European Championship. When the Worlds are outside Europe, the class will organize a European Championship. The Youth division will be included in all championships . The class will continue to hold its Youth and Junior World Championships as part of the Junior, Youth and Masters festival. MOD Class membership included 28 countries from 5 continents. The IMCO World Championships (Mondello ,Sicilly) attracted 120 competitors from over 20 countries, representing 5 continents. The Youth World Championships (Sopot-Poland) attracted 100 competitors from 15 countries, representing 3 continents. MJOD Class membership included 18 countries from 3 continents. The Junior World Championships (Sopot-Poland) attracted 90 competitors from 15 countries, representing 2 continents. The Class has run many other national and international events and championships :
